Re: cover picture (pub. March 10, 2008)

The homophobia with which I began my ministry did not fit in any way the gay and lesbian parishioners I have encountered in my years of ministry. So, I began to take seriously the popular Scriptural passages that are misused in the homophobic arguments. To that end I have given my efforts to encourage us toward the graciousness of our Lord in dealing with those we wish not to understand. And I have grown weary of the arguments and close votes.
I am open to be mistaken in my judgments because I have been wrong before, but my feeling is that there are many in the church who are not literalists, but condemn the expressions of homosexuality for the sake of others in the church who might be offended.
So I see the closing of the door, depicted on the March 10 cover, as a symbol of a church that would much rather be safe than faithful. Is that the future of our church? Surely not! - Hal W. LeMert, Jr
