What a shame that Dan Saperstein's excellent, thoughtful and honest article was not at center stage at the General Assembly. Now that the PUP report's recommendation #5 has passed, even with the amendments, the power given to governing bodies to disregard and deem 'non-essential' whatever provisions of the Constitution they choose, trumps the Constitution itself, while ironically claiming not to change it! It rends the fabric of our constitutional unity irreparably, for as long as it stands. Time to start dreaming about which part of the 'Balkans' you wish to live in, as presbyteries and churches go to battle over accepting each other's questionable ordinations and installations. Welcome to peace, unity and purity. - Rich McDermott

While I could not personally disagree more with the provisions of G-6.0108, and while I continue to work and hope for its future amendment, I am nevertheless as a church officer obligated to work to enforce all provisions of the PCUSA constitution including those provisions I have strong personal disagreement with.

If I cannot, in good conscience, execute these duties as a church officer I may, also in good conscience, resign my position and formally request to be discharged with regret.

While a 'local option' may or may not be in the best interests of the church it should not dissuade us from implementing any change in accordance with the provisions of our constitutional process.

'Backdoor' adoption of Recommendation #5 by the GA in lieu of a proposed constitutional amendment for presbytery ratification/ rejection will not resolve the issues surronding ordination of homosexuals and will raise new consititutional issues that may very well serve to foster the denominational schism we all so desperately hope to avoid.
